Brief Description

This module introduces students to the influences of culture on both organisations and their management style and also matters concerning consumer demand and behaviour. It highlights the significance of cultural diversity and protocol in the operation and management of businesses in the Leisure industries.

Indicative Syllabus

Topics include: globalisation and culture; cultural diversity in global organisations; leadership in international management; intercultural communication; culture and the consumer decision-making process; cross- cultural perceptions of ethical management; management strategies for promoting increased cultural consciousness, and reconciliation of cultural differences in organisations.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the implications of globalisation for cultural diversity in the Leisure sectors;
  2. Identify and theoretically justify the requirements of successful international business management in the service industries;
  3. Analyse business practices and employee behaviour at global level in the context of the cultures of different international societies;
  4. Analyse the significance of culture in consumer decision making and patterns of consumption for members of different international societies;
  5. Appreciate methods for reconciling cultural differences in the Leisure sectors; and
  6. Demonstrate their key skills in the following areas:  Communication and Literacy, Problem Solving, Independent Learning and Working and Working with Others
