Brief Description

The module considers the operational management challenges relating to the management of venues and facilities for events, sport, hospitality and tourist activities. It affords an opportunity to examine issues, principles, problems and integrated solutions for a venue or facility relating to one of these industry sectors.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will include: principles of integrated planning and design applicable to a diverse range of permanent and temporary venues or facilities; provision for specific users and client groups; industry-specific standards, guidelines and specifications; programming, scheduling, booking, ticketing and admissions systems; the implications of technologies and materials for operational service delivery and sustainability; the management and maintenance of the internal environment within venues and facilities; innovations in design and operations;  the potential for diversification of income streams for venues and facilities such as franchising, retail, broadcasting.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. appreciate the importance of integrated planning, design and operations for effective and sustainable management of venues and facilities;
  2. assess the implications of legislation, standards, codes of practice and customer or client expectations for the design and operations of venues and facilities;
  3. evaluate the appropriateness of a range of systems, materials and technologies in different venue or facility settings;
  4. examine the management challenges and opportunities arising from  a variety of income streams available to the venue or facility manager.
