Brief Description

This module will introduce students to general management issues across the resort sector in an accessible and manageable way. While focusing on the challenges of managing resort in the 21st Century, it integrates the themes of sustainability, internationalism, technology and globalization throughout to provide a thoroughly modern approach to the study of resort.

Indicative Syllabus

The module provides comprehensive coverage of all the most common types of resorts. Covering key issues such as management definitions and theory applicable to the resorts, globalisation and sustainability. It addresses the challenges and examines the realities of resorts management in an international context. It also explores sporting, gaming, mobile resorts across developing countries.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:

  1. Apply management principles and techniques to hotel and resort businesses to analyse and evaluate their functional strategies
  2. Analyse the value of being able to forecast demand and apply principles of effecting change through tactical price setting, product development and revenue management.
  3.  Apply principles of holistic performance measurement to hotel and resort businesses and assess key performance indicators
  4. Evaluate suitable options for the future development of hotel and resort businesses under critical consideration of external influences
  5. Appraise the sustainability of hotel and resort businesses whilst considering the multiple dimensions of the concepts
  6. Apply a range of skills, including: written and oral and visual presentation skills, use ICT skills which hotel and resort businesses operate and present relevant data and evidence and effectively plan and manage the independent learning experience
