Brief Description

This module provides an overview of disciplinary approaches to the study of play and explores the underlying themes of these perspectives. Students will also be introduced to the influence of disciplinaryperspectives on play theory. Students will draw on their own experience to examine assumptions and beliefs regarding play in the light of the differences between the disciplines. Students will practice observation skills through observing children's play, and analyse these observations drawing on theories of play. Students will reflect on both their practice and the issues surrounding observation. The module will introduce students to a range of academic study skills(personal development planning, time and information management, studyskills, ICT skills, reading, referencing, researching and academic writing).

Indicative Syllabus

Examination of disciplinary perspectives and paradigms of play, including physiology/biology, sociology, and psychology; exploration of theories of play and of professional practice with children at play; exploring disciplinary approaches to the relationship between play, health and well-being; methods, approaches and issues concerning the use of observation in working with children; practical observations of play; evaluating observations and reflecting on practice. Academic study skills areintegrated into the subject content delivery.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of disciplinary paradigms;
  2. demonstrate an understanding of a range of theories of children's play;
  3. apply new understanding to consider the relationship between play, health and well-being
  4. develop, implement and evaluate methods for observing children's play;
  5. demonstrate effective use of information and communication technologies to support their own learning and to communicate with peers
  6. communicate ideas effectively;
  7. work effectively as an independent learner.
