Brief Description

In this module students will study devising techniques and ethical approaches to creating performance with an emphasis on the ethical implications of creating work for specific client groups. Practical application of these skills will lead to a devised performance.

This module is Category A under the University’s Active Engagement in Learning Scheme.  This means that absence from specified sessions will result in a loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus

Students will learn the basis of improvisation techniques and understand the techniques required by studying major improvising practitioners and contemporary devising companies. Students will understand the need forappropriate practice within the rehearsal situation for creating appropriate issue-based work regarding the practical application of these skills. Students will create a devised performance for a specific setting.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of key practitioners and practices, both contemporary and historical.
  2. Collaborate to devise an original piece of work from inception to performance whilst appreciating the need for ethical approaches and responsibility regarding process and performance.
  3. Understand the complexity of group dynamics in the devising process and use this understanding to aid in the management and leadership of groups.
  4. Engage critically in appropriate independent research as part of the process of creating new performance.
  5. Understand the theory and practice of the audience–performer relationship
