Brief Description

In this module students will learn the techniques required to study and create a character. Students will deepen their understanding of actingtheory using the methods and strategies of major acting practitioners with a focus on practical application of various performance techniques.

Indicative Syllabus

The understanding of acting practice and praxis will be delivered by lectures and practical exercises applied to creating and realising a role from text to performance. Students will understand acting theory and experience exercises to aid the synthesis between language, body and emotion. Students will study a scripted role applying and reflecting on these technical skills in a rehearsal process through to performance

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of key practitioners of acting praxis and practices, both contemporary and historical.
  2. Engage intelligently with the key components of performance and the processes by which it is created and realised.
  3. Engage in appropriate independent research, whether investigating past or present performances or as part of the process of creating new performance.
  4. Exercise initiative and personal responsibility, operating as an independent and reflective learner
