Brief Description

In this module students will study the major developments in the history of theatre from the ancient Greeks to the twentieth century.

Indicative Syllabus

This module examines the beginnings of theatre with Greek tragedy and comedy, its development through the Elizabethan and Restoration periods, social and cultural influences on theatre and the impact these have had on modern theatre through lectures and practical experience of the genres. Students will choose a theatre practitioner and willresearch and develop a presentation on them.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of key practitioners and analyse current practices in theatre whilst recognising its historical antecedents.
  2. Appreciate the impact that the performing arts have on society and vice versa
  3. Demonstrate analytical skills in developing ideas and the capacity to evaluate and present them in a range of ways.
  4. Confidently and engagingly present the results of research to others.
