Brief Description

The module aims to provide the basis for students to identify the diversity of special interest tourism products and the socio-cultural context in which they have developed and are managed.

Indicative Syllabus

The module presents special interest tourism and its relationship with mass tourism through an analysis of significant factors that have enabled a wide diversity of special interest tourism products to emerge. It investigates the key concept of market segmentation and tourist demand elements and how these have drawn upon a wide natural and cultural resource base to create new products. Authenticity and resource commodification emerge as key issues that must be addressed by tourism managers as they seek to manoeuvre their products in the wider socio-economic environment.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Identify the diversity of special interest tourism products and their relationship with tourist demand;
  2. Understand the key supply elements that enable entrepreneurs to take advantage of market opportunities;
  3. Analyse the relationship between special interest tourism and mass tourism;
  4. Explain issues associated with the development and use of natural and cultural resources ion the development of special interest tourism products;
  5. Demonstrate a range of key skills that are required to evaluate contemporary trends in special interest tourism including: Communication and literacy; Problem Solving; Independent working and learning.
