Brief Description

The aim of this module is to draw upon the experiences of those working in the tourism sector to inform student understanding of the business operating environment and the issues faced by tourism businesses.

Indicative Syllabus

The module identifies the meaning of tourism management and the key issues that managers must engage with to ensure the successful operation of their business. This also includes developing a sound awareness of tourist motivation and purchasing behaviour and how this is utilised by managers to develop new tourism products. Key field data collection skills of project planning, recording interviews and observations, and self-reflection are also taught and put into practice.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand practical management issues derived from a tourist business perspective;
  2. Understand the meaning of strategic planning for tourism at a destination region level;
  3. Identify and analyse the key factors in tourist decision making and purchasing processes;
  4. Develop and practice field data gathering strategies; and
  5. Demonstrate a range of key skills that are required to evaluate the contemporary travel, transport and tourism relationship including: Communication and literacy; Problem Solving; and Independent working and learning.
