Brief Description

The module aims to identify the key features of the contemporary tourism sector, its product base and management.  Analysis of the tourism sector is conducted at local, regional and international levels.

Indicative Syllabus

The module investigates the contemporary tourism sector by establishing its historical context and interpreting this through the use of models, an understanding of destination development, the roles of key national and globally influential organisations and demand and supply relationships. The environment is interpreted as a resource used in tourism. Culture and its placewithin tourism products is also analysed through the use of case studies that re of regional and global significance.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1.  Identify the business, policy and government components that coalesce to form the tourism sector;
  2. Understand the relationship between demand and the supply of tourism opportunities and how these can be modelled
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of the key organisations and their roles in overseeing tourism development and management;
  4. Identify the relationships that exist between tourism and the physical environment;
  5. Identify the meaning of culture and the use of cultural attributes in tourism;
  6. Identify the impacts of tourism and the concept of sustainability in tourism management;
  7. Demonstrate a range of key skills that are required to evaluate the contemporary tourism sector including Communication and literacy; Problem Solving; and Independent working and learning.
