Brief Description

This module requires the student to undertake a period of work experience, which is organised by the student in liaison with the module tutor. The module requires the student to develop a 'learning contract' with the module tutor and host organisation, which clarifies the professional and vocational skills and knowledge that the student will be seeking to develop through the work experience, and which specifies the learning support required, the assessment structure and the timescale for completion. The nature and length of the work experience will be different for each student; it may include work over short or long periods, full or part time. The assessment will be based upon the preparation of a portfolio of evidence, the development of an action plan and updated CV. Tutorial support is provided.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will work with their work placement and module tutor to clarify what skills they will be practicing. It is envisaged that they will undertake both operational and administrative tasks to allow for a broad understanding of basic management skills in leisure industry contexts. This module aims to enable students to gain first-hand experience of working within a professional context. It aims to give students an understanding of what constitutes employability and how to define and communicate their expertise and knowledge and to translate theoretical and practical knowledge into professional skills. It also aims to encourage students to make beneficial connections within a professional context. It also seeks to enable students to reflect upon how the experience gained can be used towards their career aspirations.
