Brief Description

A module which links the idea and practice of fine art with the idea and practice of landscape design, that is ‘landscape as art’. The module seeks to link site based landscape design with theory and precedent and individual self expression.

Indicative Syllabus

The module investigates the relationship between ideas of place and the ways that landforms and landscapes can be developed as art.  This will be explored through case studies and critical evaluations of the bodies of work of designers and artists.

It requires students to engage with the history of landscape design and of landscape as a host for site and land art; as well as the associated theory, approaches and key exponents of the subject area.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a)  can critically review the practice and product of designers, including land and site artists and relate that knowledge to the contexts of fine art & landscape design and the production of place;
b)  can formulate a project brief which applies specialist technical or research skills to the study of landscape design and land/site art.
c)  have studied landscape design and  land/site art  as a process of procurement, not only as a product, and can discuss it in its social, cultural and economic context.
d) can formulate a personal approach/philosophy to landscape design & land/site art  backed up by theory, history and precedent



ii. Skills
On completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a)  can transfer and apply their creative and diagnostic skills to the study of landscape design & land/site art;
b)  can exercise appropriate judgement in resourcing and managing their project.
c)can communicate their work to a level of written, graphic and verbal presentation appropriate for Level 3/6
