Brief Description A semester 1 fieldtrip, typically of one week. Participation in Fieldweek will enable students to gain experience and knowledge of the characteristics of various built design projects and their associated context and culture.
Indicative Syllabus

Field classes will involve preparatory tuition, between five and eight days work in a challenging and unfamiliar physical, social or cultural environment, and 'follow-up' sessions for evaluation and reflection. The residential period will include tutor-led introductions to themes and local environments and independent and/or group project work.

Themes include landscape appreciation and analysis, comparative environmental management, and heritage interpretation.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a)  appreciate and understand specific elements of the physical, cultural and/or managerial environment in which they are engaged;
b)  have gained technical or other specialised knowledge and understanding
c)  are aware of the cultural conventions
d) have met the challenge of working in the environment beyond the classroom to achieve particular academic objectives;
e)  have understood how their work addresses the aims of their studies



ii. Skills
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a)  can undertake rapid reconnaissance techniques of sites, locales or regions to be able establish appropriate targets for study;
b)  can plan, initiate, undertake and conclude individual or group projects with tutor guidance;
c)  can work effectively individually or in teams to collect and analyse information;
d) can produce written reports, verbal presentations or other materials (eg designs) utilising the style and terminology appropriate to the discipline;
e)  have developed skills and confidence in personal management.

Learning and Teaching Activities

150 hours study time
The norms for the module are 3% preparatory lectures or seminars, 10% preparatory reading, 7% preparatory project planning, 30% Fieldwork and 50% student directed assignment work

002: 50% Coursework: Individual report: 2000 words or equivalent
