Brief Description Studio based landscape design exercises applying key skills, theorems and knowledge at Level II.
Indicative Syllabus

The aim of the module is for the students to apply, develop and enhance knowledge and skills gained at Level I and Level II modules. Students will engage with the iterative process of design through exercises which will interpret client and context information, evaluate feasibility & produce appropriately designed solutions. This will include spatial design and planning; the application of design methods and processes, creativity and inspiration; the selection of appropriate hard & soft materials and the skills of graphic presentation & communication.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a)   have a sound grasp of the theory and practice used in landscape architecture;
b)   can demonstrate the ability to evaluate the process and outcomes of design work and can understand & communicate means of improvement;
c)   have developed their understanding of their design discipline in a variety of design contexts at different scales, in the public realm and in more intimate private spaces.



ii. Skills
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a)   can interpret client & contextual information, in the formulation of design briefs for the design of landscape spaces;
b)   can identify design objectives and strategies, evaluate and communicate them in an ordered and coherent way via a design appraisal and rationale;
c)   can produce a design solution based on an imaginative conceptual understanding and response to the site and brief;
d)   can present work to an appropriate level of written and graphic layout for Level II

Learning and Teaching Activities

Total study time: 300 hours for the module. Of which:

Staff/student contact: 30% (All studio workshop based. Lectures and tutorials structured throughout the module. Presentations by students and peer group review of work also in studio).
Student directed learning: 70%

Assessment (For further details see the Module Guide) 001: 60% Coursework: A portfolio of design work on multiple sites: 4,800 words or equivalent)
002: 40% Coursework: Individual, portfolio: Single Site Design Exercise: 3200 words or equivalent
