Module Title Landscape Planning
Module Code LAA202
Module Tutor David Booth
School Art and Design
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 5
Pre-requisites None
Co-requisites None
Restrictions None
Brief Description The module introduces the challenges of development on the urban fringe, requiring a multi-disciplinary, holistic approach. It is intended to introduce students to the context of working towards sustainable development of the landscape whilst recognising the constraints of the planning system and utilising GIS for data interrogation.
Indicative Syllabus This module focuses on the identification and integration of a range of landscape and urban design issues encountered at the larger scale. Exploring the shift from small scale site specific survey to the larger scale ‘Character Assessment’ as the basis for appraising a site. It seeks to furnish students with an underpinning knowledge of the current planning framework and approaches to sustainable design. It requires students to consider these issues as a part of a holistic design and planning process, reflecting on these as constraints and opportunities. The use of GIS as a data interrogation and analysis tool will be explored. Students are required to undertake group research and produce a group report on the character assessment of a given site and its capacity to absorb development. As Individuals students then produce outline development proposals for a given site.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
a)  explain the current planning context for sustainable development;
b)  explain and use ‘Character Assessment’  in identifying site context and capacity
c)  inform the design process with an understanding of the planning context;
d) put their own discipline into the context of the sustainable development debate;
e)  have understanding of the theory and applications of GIS.

ii. Skills
On completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they can:
a)  undertake a ‘Character Assessment’;
b)  apply the findings as a framework for development;
c)  present work as part of a group and as an individual;
d) use GIS in the interrogation, analysis and presentation of data;
e)  use appropriate computer based and hand drawn graphic techniques to investigate, describe and promote development proposals at a larger scale.
