Brief Description

This module provides students with an overview of how communication has changed since the development of high-interactivity Internet technology at the turn of the century. If and how digital journalism has democratised the media will form a major part of this module and students will create their own online journalistic profile.

Indicative Syllabus

New technological practices such as blogs, hyperlocal news sites and file sharing have increased the accessibility of media content for global audiences. This has led to claims that new technology has democratised the media by taking power away from traditional outlets and putting it into the hands of citizens. This module will examine how digital journalism practices have changed the landscape of the mass media in an economical, sociological and historical context. As well as being introduced to the theoretical context, students will be introduced to the skills needed to produce online material and will produce their own online journalistic profile using blogs and other forms of social media.
