Brief Description This module will explore complex narrative structures and traditions and the use of still and/or moving images in the recounting of stories, building upon skills and knowledge covered in DE204 Narrative Illustration. The module will enable students to further establish their illustrative style and identity through a project(s) requiring scripting (animation or still sequence) or a narrative composition.
Indicative Syllabus The module will further explore narrative structures as used in a communications media, for example within literature and film, and how these structures might be utilized and exploited within the illustrative media. Linear and more complex non-linear narratives will be discussed and examined along with methods for the development of narratives within single or a sequence of images. Students will initiate a project(s) of their own by choosing as a reference source a poem, short story, film sequence or an appropriate alternative starting point from which to adapt a script or narrative composition. The most appropriate materials and production techniques to be used will be determined by the students and could include 2D, 3D, single, multiple or moving images produced in any medium but should enable the student to further develop and refine their own style and identity as an illustrator/animator.

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they: understand complex narrative structures and traditions used in communications media critically evaluate alternatives and establish an appropriate narrative structures for a specific purpose and audience (and/or client)
b) evaluate the suitability of materials and illustration techniques to be used in response to specific story-telling challenges.

a) the critical evaluation and choice of an appropriate narrative structure(s) for a defined purpose and audience
b) the research and development of illustrative solutions to complex communications problems
c) the further development of an individual style and identity through the refinement of a personal visual l anguage and production methodology.
