Brief Description This module aims to present students with the opportunity of producing a wide range of advanced promotional material, whether it be for the promotion of a given product, service or the self-promotion of the individual for output to screen and/or print.
Indicative Syllabus Based on research and analysis of the requirements and demands of industry particular to the students area of interest and/or across a range of specialisms with an explicit link to the professional, working environment related to their discipline area. The nature and scope of the project and/or placement should be negotiated with the module tutor leading to the production of a Learning Contract prior to the commencement of the project or placement.

Students will be required to prepare and present a body of work to potential clients. The promotion project must have a direct link with the world of work in that it should involve an external client, business, organisation, funding body, gallery or exhibition venue etc. or have a direct association with the career aspirations or preparation for employment of the student.

This will include the development of a professionally produced personal portfolio of work. This may include an actual and/or digital portfolio for promotion on the web or CD/DVD or as an animated showreel; the exhibiition and printing of books and promotional material; the identification of clients and the research, development and production of suitable and effective marketing and promotional material strategies and approaches. Particular emphasis will be placed on the continuous evaluation of the strengths and weakness of each student’s promotional project.

Examples of appropriate projects include
1) The organisation and mounting of a group or solo exhibition. The scope of such an exhibition could vary considerably in term of the number of exhibitors, location of gallery/venue, the need for publicity material, private view, budget, fund raising, catalogue etc. but should involve negotiation with external individuals, businesses or organizations
2)The presentation of printed books, comic projects or animations at book fairs, festivals or conventions.
3) The preparation of material for self-promotion and entry to freelance practice or for employment. This could include the design and production of personal freelance identity material.
4) The negotiation, organization and undertaking of a period of work placement in an organization or business or with a freelance designer, illustrator, photographer appropriate to the career aspirations of the student.

By the end of the module students should have gained a better working knowledge of current practice along with an ability to produce innovative and individual promotional materials.

On completion of the module students will be required to deliver a presentation of their final promotional strategy to their peers and module tutor/tutors

Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
The knowledge and understanding derived from the module will vary according to the nature and scope of the project/placement negotiated by the student but it is expected that the students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) understand the concept and importance of communicating effectively with potential clients
b) appreciate the different characteristics and potential for the placement of their work in a variety of media environments
c) have a sound knowledge and understanding of their personal attributes, skills and abilities as they relate to their potential progression to employment within an established organisation or as a freelance practitioner
d) Have a comprehensive understanding of employment opportunities and/or business practices within the creative industries as appropriate to their own discipline area.


ii. Skills
By the end of the module, students should have developed skills in:
a) effective communication and negotiation with individuals and/or groups in relation to a work/professional environment appropriate to the students’ discipline area
b) the analysis and clarification of personal aims and objectives in relation to their career aspirations and taking responsibility for personal development and the enhancement of their skills profile.
c) design output for a range of products, using various presentation methods.
