Brief Description This module is a negotiated project reflecting a particular area of interest . It is envisaged that the outcome will be a body of practical work and will form the student’s main and most significant portfolio work. The assigned tutor for student's subject will agree assessable outcomes based on the student's written proposal. This module will provide students with an opportunity to undertake a negotiated project with an explicit link to the working environment of the student’s area of study which may also incorporate a further period of work experience or professional practice. Students will be required to agree a Learning Contract with their module tutor, clearly defining the nature of the project they wish to undertake and agreeing the specific learning outcomes as they relate to the project/place
Indicative Syllabus Students will be expected to negotiate, and thereafter initiate their brief, or briefs, with the advice of the module tutor (tutor allocated will be from area of practical study in which module is to be undertaken). The proposal will be required in word-processed format and will form part of the assessable work. Briefs should provide the opportunity to research into a subject of personal interest. The student's proposal should clearly identify aims and objectives of the work. It is expected that the brief will allow students to demonstrate a high level of understanding, control and individuality, commensurate with level III work and requirements. It is helpful if students carefully read the assessment criteria to ensure their initial proposal provides opportunity to achieve the range of requirements examined at assessment. Students should be ambitious in scope and demonstrate awareness of the contemporary work, critical thinking and the leading players in the fields of Illustrators, designers, animators, filmmakers, photographers and other creative artists, which may help their work. This should help their work to approach the cutting edge, vital at this stage of their study.
Learning Outcomes ) i. Knowledge and Understanding
The knowledge and understanding derived from a proposal will vary between students, however the independent study should promote an understanding of the requirements and discipline necessary to researching and negotiating a period of self directed study.

ii. Skills
These will vary between project proposals; however, it can be anticipated that the development of communication, time-keeping, budgeting and note-keeping skills will be common to all students taking this module. Ability to analyse and clarify personal aims and objectives will be promoted in taking responsibility for personal development. Allied to this will be the development of a greater critical awareness of contemporary practice in chosen area of study.
