Brief Description

This module will introduce students to some important themes and issues surrounding the illustration profession. The history of illustration with a specific emphasis on the evolution of the professional practise of the illustrator.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will examine contemporary debates, themes and issues relating to the illustration professions including; Illustrator as author, designer and producer; ethics and social responsibility; propaganda and protest; global design; hand-made and beyond digital design. Students will be required to analyse and discuss a variety of visual representations using a range of methodologies including semiology, ideology, and gender with a specific emphasis on the evolution of the professional practise of the illustrator.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) critically evaluate issues and debates relating to contemporary illustration practice
b) analyse visual representations using appropriate theoretical methodologies
c) understand how to develop research strategies



ii. Skills
a) apply a range of analytical methodologies
b) develop skills in independent learning and use of research
c) apply knowledge gained to his / her own practice
