Brief Description To identify and explore the range of illustration needs within publishing and become aware of industry ethics, practises, and procedures.
Indicative Syllabus This module will explore the development of illustration styles and techniques in all areas of publishing from the early days of publishing through to the digital age. Students will expand their understanding of the publishing industry through lectures, individual research, and the production of a “real world” practical project reflecting an aspect of publishing in which they are particularly interested.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) have a knowledge of the breadth of the publishing industry
b) are aware of the history of illustration in publishing and can draw on influences from it where appropriate b) have an understanding of the technical requirements involved in publishing and how illustrations fit in to those processes
d) appreciate the concepts of style, emotion, quality, and relevance to target audience
e) have some awareness and understanding of the ethics, responsibilities, procedures, and practises, within the publishing industry


ii. Skills
By the end of the module, students should have developed skills in:
a) research and referencing of source material
b) creative thinking and problem solving
c) image making with relevance to a brief, time, and budget constraints
d) page layout and the production of artwork
