Brief Description | To gain an understanding of child and parent visual psychology and to become familiar with the industry’s working practises and procedures, and the breadth of its creativity, and application. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will explore the development of illustration in the children’s publishing industry and build a sound knowledge base of the procedures and practices as well as the current trends and work opportunities in the field.It will also introduce and explore, at a basic level, issues of child psychology with reference to visual sophistication and style, and subject stimuli at different ages and what parents look for when buying books for children.Subjects will be introduced through a series of lectures and students will conduct research into styles of children’s illustration as they apply to age ranges and gender. The knowledge gained will be applied in a practical “real world” project based on an area of particular interest to the student to nurture their creativity, problem solving and applied skills. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) have a knowledge of the breadth of the children’s publishing industry including the range of subjects, styles, and practice b) are aware of illustration past and present in the children’s publishing area and are able to draw on influences from it where appropriat c) have an understanding of basic child psychology with reference to visual sophistication and subject interests of various age ranges d) appreciate the importance of critical appraisal and problem solving within set constraints e) have developed their creative thinking and knowledge of style and illustrative techniques. ii. Skills By the end of the module, students should have developed skills in: a) research with reference to age ranges and styles of illustrative content b) creative thinking and problem solving c) image making with relevance to the visual sophistication of the age and gender of the target audience. |
