Brief Description Story telling through the use of images. This module will further explore narrative structures and traditions and the use of still and/or moving images in the recounting of stories, building upon skills and knowledge introduced in DE201 Sequential Illustration.
Indicative Syllabus The module will examine a variety of narrative structures as used in a communications media, for example within literature and film, and how these structures might be utilized within the medium of illustration and animation. Linear and non-linear narratives will be explored along with methods of developing a narrative within a single or a sequence of images. Students will be free to choose from a number of design briefs that require the development and structuring of a narrative and the development of character(s) and events through the medium of illustration. The most appropriate materials and productions techniques to be used will be determined by the students and could include 2D, 3D, single, multiple or moving images produced in any medium.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they:
a) understand different narrative structures and traditions used in communications media
b) determine the suitability of a narrative structure(s) for a specific purpose(s) and audience(s) or client
c) assess the suitability of materials and illustration techniques to be used in response to specific story-telling challenges.


ii. Skills
By the end of the module, students should have developed skills in:
a) the evaluation and choice of appropriate narrative structures and production methodologies
b) the research and development of illustrative solutions to a communications problem(s)
c) the development of an individual identity through the refinement of a personal visual language and style.
