Brief Description | This module will introduce the concept of graphic storytelling through sequential imagery and visual narrative. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will introduce sequential illustration in media, advertising, comic strips and books and consider its relationship with Animation and the development of animated projects. Subjects covered will include the structuring of the elements required to craft a story concept by arranging images and words to create a visual narrative. Students will be introduced to; the history and development of the comic strip, Graphic novels and Bandes Desinees as a communications tool; the depiction of mood, emotion and elapsed time through sequential storytelling. Students will learn about the expression of original ideas through selected pictures and text styles — covering cinematic effects such as camera angles and lighting to effectively express ideas and concepts. These skills will also be applied into digital methods of animation production applying considerations of time and sound to the development of narrative. Students will utilize industry standard software packages as Macromedia After Effects and Flash MX. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) understand the framework and principles of illustrative sequences and the relationship of image to text and text to image within a narrative b) have a knowledge of the historical background to the use of sequential illustration in communication c) understanding the potential of animation as a means for the communication of ideas and information. d) understand the relationship between the potential audience, the client and the work ii. Skills By the end of the module, students should have developed skills in: a) applying the principles in respect of the relationships between text and image to successfully explore a storyline b) planning, execution and presentation of concepts for print and in a time based context c) taking the planning, storyboarding and delivery of an Animation or Bandes Desinees project to a high level of production values d) the visual and verbal articulation of ideas and concepts f) the development of ‘making’ and realisation skills g) self management: conceiving and realising work within a set timescale. |
