Brief Description | This module covers the underpinning knowledge and skills required to enable practitioners to be able to provide effective care for older people who present with mental health care needs within a variety of settings. Students will be encouraged to consider the holistic implications of caring for an older person and explore some of the implications of the mental health difficulties commonly associated with this group of people. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will cover the following topics:

Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding On successful completion of the module students should be able to: a) Analyse the factors specifically associated with the mental health care requirements of older people; b) Outline the specific aetiology and disease progression of mental health conditions associated with an older person; c) Apply the legal framework for the care of older people with mental health conditions; d) Discuss different intervention strategies which would be appropriate to use with a older client group who present with mental health needs; e) Propose health promotion strategies which could be implemented to support older people and their carers to look after their mental health; f) Evaluate the occurrence and causes of abuse of older people with mental health problems and ways of preventing and managing these. ii. Skills On successful completion of the module the student should be able to: a) Negotiate service provision with diverse individuals with conflicting needs; b) Communicate in writing and in images to a range of audiences; c) Analyse information from a range of sources; d) Reflect on the decisions needed to plan for care. |
