Brief Description This module covers the underpinning knowledge and skills required to enable practitioners to meet the essential care needs of patients and clients within a variety of care settings. Students will be able to practice these skills within a lab setting and will be provided with the opportunity to explore how they can be effectively implemented within their work settings. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.
Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover the following topics:

  • Undertaking observations;
  • Meeting personal hygiene needs;
  • Enabling patients/clients to eat and drink;
  • Continence;
  • Mobility;
  • Providing Pressure Area Care;
  • Understanding Infection Control;
  • Wound Care;
  • Underpinning themes running through all sessions will include accountability, communication skills, record keeping, the promotion of dignity and health, working in partnership with others including carers and those from other sectors.
Learning Outcomes

i Knowledge and Understanding:
On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
a) Outline the normal biological processes that underpin the performance of essential care skills;
b) Discuss how the bio/psycho/social/spiritual and cultural dimensions of the individual contribute to care requirements;
c) Derive a critical knowledge of the sources of knowledge and skills that contribute to professional practice;
d) Demonstrate an understanding of personally accountability for practice

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Safely and effectively perform essential care skills;
b) Reflect on practice;
c) Communicate in writing;
d) Manage own learning.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact:  30% (lectures, workshops and tutorials)
Student directed learning: 50%
Work based learning: 20%
