Brief Description | This module aims to support the development of first line management skills in those aspiring to, or seeking to improve, this area of their work. It is one of three modules that address the key underpinning knowledge and skills defined in the Management and Leadership Award for children's or adults' services. This module concentrates on the management of activities and resources – human and material. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will cover the following topics:

Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding On successful completion of the module students should be able to: a) Explain the systems and contingency theories of management as applied to the private, public and voluntary sectors; b) Identify the leadership style, team and communication processes necessary for the maintenance of an environment that protects and safeguards service users and staff whilst encouraging their participation, development and rights (Role B Unit 6, Role A Unit 1, HSCL4U9, C13, D2); c) Design ways of managing the development and direction of new provision including the establishment of a business plan (Role A Unit 2, Role D Unit 19 A4); d) Examine processes needed for the preparation of a budget and the management of financial resources (Role D Unit 20, B3); ii. Skills On successful completion of the module the student should be able to: a) Use a spreadsheet for a business application; b) Plan in the context of business activity; c) Demonstrate leadership skills. |
