Brief Description This module covers the underpinning knowledge and skills required to enable practitioners to be able to provide effective care for older people within a variety of care settings. Students will be encouraged to consider the holistic implications of caring for an older person and explore some of the physical health implications commonly associated with this group of people as well as some of the services, aids and adaptations available and their legal context. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards. CAT points 15
Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • the ageing process and its effects on mobility, responses to acute illnesses, and sensory acuity;
  • the care required to support older people with physical health needs including those with sensory impairments and those being rehabilitated or re-enabled following acute illness or falls;
  • the National Service Framework for Older People;
  • underpinning themes running through all sessions will include accountability, communication skills, record keeping, the promotion of dignity and health, working in partnership with others including carers and those from other sectors.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
a) Discuss the factors specifically associated with the care requirements of older people, including those linked to age related sensory decline;
b) Analyse the management of falls and their prevention in older people;
c) Explain the way that acute illness presents and progresses within older people and the way that these are affected by secondary complication;
d) Assess the methods for rehabiliting or re-enabling older people recovering from an acute episode:
e) Suggest health promotion strategies, assistive technology, and other support processes which could be implemented to support older people and their carers to look after their physical health, social situation and mental well being.




ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Negotiate service provision with diverse individuals with conflicting needs;
b) Communicate in writing and in images to a range of audiences;
c) Analyse information from a range of sources;
d) Reflect on the decisions needed to plan for care and to respond to acute illness in older people.

Work based learning: 20%
