Brief Description

This module supports practitioners working in health and care settings to make work based learning explicit for the purpose of achieving academic credit. It recognises that learning takes place in a variety of settings and, via the development of an analytical and reflective approach, supports practitioners to evidence and critically appraise the links they have made between their practice and the underpinning theory.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • the significance of learning opportunities for professional development;
  • evaluating the quality of learning opportunities, critically evaluating learning from experience including the extent to which that knowledge is specific to a particular discipline area;
  • the relationship and integration of theory and practice.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Utilize an understanding of learning styles to be proactive in securing learning opportunities in practice;
  2. Critically reflect on personal learning opportunities in practice;
  3. Critically review opportunities for organisational learning that has resulted from the practice based experience;
  4. Self-assessment and links with development planning skills for self and others;
  5. Responding to and developing learning opportunities available in practice for workplace development;
  6. Reflective writing and portfolio development skills including the way that evidence is used to reform and enhance practice.
