Brief Description

This double module supports practitioners working in health and care settings to make learning for work based competencies within clinical practice; explicit for the purpose of achieving academic credit. It recognises that learning takes place in a variety of clinical settings focusing on, via the development of an analytical and reflective approach, the development of knowledge and clinically based competencies that underpin clinical practice in the clinical setting.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • the significance of clinical learning opportunities for professional development;
  • critical evaluation of clinical learning from experience;
  • the relationship and integration of theory and clinical practice:
  • the impact of multi-professional working on working practices;
  • the use of portfolios to demonstrate developing clinical practice and the way that research impacts on practice;
  • reflection on practice;
  • specific competencies identified from within the clinical practice area;
  • development of personal learning contracts to attain the skills and underpinning knowledge.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Utilize an understanding of learning styles to be proactive in securing learning opportunities in clinical practice, including opportunities to work in other settings and across traditional professional boundaries;
  2. Critically reflect on personal learning opportunities in practice;
  3. Critically review opportunities for organisational learning that has resulted from clinically based competencies;
  4. Self-assess and make links with development planning skills for self and others;
  5. Respond to and develop learning opportunities available in practice for development of competencies;
  6. Write reflectively and show portfolio development skills including the way that evidence is used to reform and enhance practice.
