Students will be required to have access to an area of clinical practice that supports students and be mentored by a health professional (from the same professional background) with suitable qualification and/or experience).

Brief Description

The module aims to provide professional development for health professionals working in clinical settings to provide support for pre-qualification students from their respective professions in the clinical arena through mentorship, supervision and teaching, reflecting the recommendations, where appropriate, of professional regulatory bodies, and to be able to contribute to general teaching and learning opportunities within their clinical setting.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • theory and methods of learning, teaching and assessment in the clinical situation;
  • organising and co-coordinating learning activities in clinical settings;
  • supervising students and providing them with constructive feedback on their achievements;
  • setting and monitoring of realistic learning objectives;
  • assessing clinical performance including skills, attitudes and behaviour;
  • delivering effective teaching activities in the clinical environment.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Critically discuss the role and attributes of practice based educators;
  2. Critically apply learning theories appropriate for adult professional learners and create learning opportunities to promote that learning;
  3. Plan, implement and facilitate evidence based learning in the practice setting;
  4. Deliver educationally appropriate clinically based teaching sessions;
  5. Apply sound principles and judgement in the assessment of performance in the practice setting and reflect on teaching experiences to formulate action plans to improve future educational practice;
  6. Develop a range of learning activities based on principles of education supporting students from a range of professional and vocational areas in the clinical setting.
