Brief Description

This module explores the dynamics of evidence-based practice with regard to interventions in the health and social care setting. The aim of the module is to enable practitioners to critically explore the evidence underpinning decision-making in health and social care delivery. Professional and political agendas will be explored together with dilemmas in practice. The module will enable students to effectively utilise a variety of evidence to support the rationale for intervention / care planning and delivery.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • overview of research methodology;
  • clinical research governance;
  • principles of research ethics and the way that this varies between the sectors;
  • introduction to desk based research methodologies;
  • introduction to quantitative and qualitative research methodologies;
  • use of appraisal tools to develop critical analyses of research and other types of evidence;
  • evidence based healthcare;
  • research proposals.
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Review critically appropriate evidence from a variety of sources;
  2. Utilise critically evaluated research and other evidence to support and inform practice;
  3. Utilise IT databases to access evidence using identified search strategies;
  4. Demonstrated the application of evidence as a rationale for care delivery;
  5. Critically evaluated decision-making processes;
  6. Develop informed health care research proposal.
