Brief Description Students will undertake a Dissertation of up to 10,000 words on an approved topic of their choice, using primary sources.
Indicative Syllabus The content will vary according to the Dissertation
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate:
(
a) a detailed knowledge of their Dissertation topic and of the sources used in the Dissertation; (
b) greater understanding of the techniques used in writing History, in particular an understanding of appropriate methodologies and of the relationship between primary sources and the finished product of the historian.



ii. Skills

Students should be able to demonstrate the following skills:
a) the development of skills generic to History, in particular skills of time management, self-directed study, and the use of libraries and information technology;
b) specific skills as used in their own Dissertation e.g. use of data bases, language skills, art-historical skills.
