Brief Description The module aims: to explore cultural and social change in Germany between the end of the First World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall; to contrast the experiences of everyday life in East and West Germany.
Indicative Syllabus This module is intended to go beyond typical accounts of the rise and fall of the Nazi Regime in order to provide students with a broader understanding of modern German history. Taking a cultural and social approach to twentieth-century German history, the module begins by considering issues of gender, sexualities and identity construction in the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. The module then compares and contrasts the nature of society in East and West Germany with particular emphasis on the role of consumption in shaping contemporary notions of identity and citizenship. Also prominent will be the cultural legacy of the holocaust on the German people, and the collapse of the East German state and its consequences for the broader interpretation of modern German history.
