Brief Description This module aims to examine the main features of American social, political, and economic development in the twentieth century and the issues raised by the rise of the modern state, economic crisis, and international conflict, and the rise of new social groups.
Indicative Syllabus This module examines American political, economic and social development from World War I through the Jazz Age and the Great Depression, and the impact of World War II. It focuses on the rise and development of the modern state, the shaping of post-war America in the Cold War and the Affluent Society, and the significance of social groups: African-Americans, youth and women. It ends with an examination of the Great Society and war in Vietnam. The module uses a variety of primary and secondary sources, including visual, film and audio material.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module, the student should be able to demonstrate:
a) an understanding of the issues that shaped American domestic history from World War I to Vietnam
b) an understanding of the interaction between political, socio-economic and cultural factors in shaping twentieth-century American history
c) a knowledge of relevant historiographical debates


ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module, the student should be able to demonstrate:
a) the ability to integrate different historian's interpretations into a coherent whole
b) the ability to interpret different types of primary evidence
c) the ability to deliver clear exposition and argument in written and oral form
