Brief Description | The module aims: to introduce students to major social, cultural and political trends in the Victorian period; to explore ways in which contemporaries experienced their social, cultural and physical environments; to examine how identities were constructed in Victorian Britain. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module has a dual purpose: to gain an understanding of how the Victorians perceived themselves and their environments; and secondly to explore how perceptions of the Victorians and their values have changed. The module takes a social and cultural approach to history, emphasising the role of class, gender and ethnicity in the construction of identities, as well exploring a range of experiences which may include popular politics, religious belief, the family and the Victorian city. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding On successful completion of the module the student should be able to demonstrate: a) a knowledge of key themes in the history of Victorian Britain b) a familiarity with the historiographical debates central to an understanding of class, gender and ethnicity in Victorian Britain c) an awareness of the distinction between the history of the Victorians and the history of ‘Victorianisms’ ii. Skills On successful completion of the module the student should be able to demonstrate: a) the ability to assess critically the arguments of historians b) the ability to utilise the analytical approaches of social and cultural history c) the ability to evaluate source materials |
