Brief Description The module aims: to introduce students to the practice and purpose of historiography and different approaches to historical enquiry; to fully prepare students to undertake a dissertation in history.
Indicative Syllabus This module is intended to prepare students for undertaking a dissertation in history. It begins by introducing students to the practice and purpose of historiography, and the variety of approaches to history (e. g. social history, cultural history, women’s history). Teamwork skills are developed through assessed presentations on a topic of historiographical debate. Students are introduced to a variety of ways of locating primary and secondary sources, receive guidance on how to research and write a history dissertation, and undertake a database assignment. By the end of the module students will have completed a detailed dissertation proposal.
Learning Outcomes i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to demonstrate:
a) the ability to locate, understand and practice historiography
b) a knowledge of the most effective means of locating primary sources in the area of the chosen dissertation topic
c) an understanding of the principles involved in the construction of databases for historical enquiry


ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to demonstrate:
a) the ability to assess critically the arguments of historians
b) teamwork and advanced presentation skills
c) the ability to locate sources and construct bibliographies appropriate to an undergraduate dissertation

005: 30% Written Exam: End of year, seen, closed book: 1.50 hours
