Brief Description

The aim of the module is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to support middle and senior managers. The module will enable students to develop a critical understanding of the complexities and contested nature of leadership and management and the contextual opportunities for improvement. It will enable the development of a range of personal and professional skills associated with the development of leadership and management strategies to facilitate organisational development and change. It requires students to reflect critically on theory and practice from an ethical and professional standpoint and provides opportunities for applied learning and continuous professional development.

Indicative Syllabus

The module seeks to develop an understanding of leadership and management. It is concerned with the development processes particular to leadership and management development, to support the development of individuals and groups. It also focuses on understanding and applying approaches to organisational development and interventions that may support strategic choices and create organisational learning.

It seeks to prepare students for working across sectors in middle or senior management positions, portfolio or consultancy careers and global roles.

The module focuses on personal skills that support leadership development in a range of cultural contexts. These include coaching, consultancy styles and skills, facilitation, conflict resolution, and feedback mechanisms.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the concepts of leadership and management, and their application in an organisational, social, environmental and multicultural context.
  2. Critically apply management development thinking and practice to a range of management improvement interventions for individuals and organisations.
  3. Critically appraise the issues in adopting a consultancy approach that will add value for clients.
  4. Define and analyse the contribution of organisation development to strategic planning and change.
  5. Critically assess the symptoms, mechanisms and dynamics of organisational conflicts.
  6. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of organisational development interventions.
  7. Support management to establish and sustain knowledge creation processes to capture and disseminate knowledge across and between organisations.
  8. Work with managers to establish structures, processes and resources to support and facilitate formal learning, self-development, continuing development and collaborative learning in and between organisations.
  9. Work collaboratively, ethically and effectively to support a sustainable partnership approach to leadership and management development.
