Brief Description

This module develops an understanding and knowledge of the function, responsibilities and requirements of an operational manager in an either nationally or internationally oriented hotel or resort business. It examines the functional role of managers and the legal, financial and operational constraints in which they operate. The module applies principles of quality management, demand management, employee productivity, pricing and revenue generation, financial performance and business control mechanisms.

Indicative Syllabus

The module provides an overview of the contemporary hotel management role in and develops an understanding of the dynamic nature of the hotel and resort industry and its defining characteristics. Students will be introduced to principles of interpreting the data and statistics generated by a hotel's activity which will be financial and non-financial in nature. Students will learn to evaluate the various functional strategies of a hotel or resort business and assess how these are impacted by organisational as well as external dynamics. Thus, the module develops an understanding of the proactive development of the business through the tactical use of revenue management, pricing, marketing and business expansion. It also reviews legal aspects relevant to the operation of hotels and resorts in a local and international context. The aim is for students to assess how hotels and resorts can be positioned competitively at the business unit level and how overall business performance can be optimised whilst demonstrating a critical understanding of the concept of sustainability and its multiple dimensions.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:

a) Apply management principles and techniques to hotel and resort businesses to analyse and evaluate their functional strategies
b) Analyse the value of being able to forecast demand and apply principles of effecting change through tactical price setting, product development and revenue management
c) Apply principles of holistic performance measurement  to hotel and resort businesses and assess key performance indicators
d) Evaluate suitable options for the future development of hotel and resort businesses under critical consideration of external influences
e) Appraise the sustainability of hotel and resort businesses whilst considering the multiple dimensions of the concepts
