Brief Description This module addresses issues essential to the effective management facilities within hotels and other associated venues. The module has a facilities management orientation and focuses on design, planning, resourcing, operation and management from this perspective.
Indicative Syllabus This module will address contemporary management issues within hospitality services from a facilities management perspective. It evaluates principles of facilities design and management and relevant management techniques commonly adopted in the hospitality business. The following core principles will be discussed: factors impacting on facilities design and capacity planning including legal, marketing, operational, financial, environmental, safety and security aspects; the use of IC technology for property management and profit maximisation; concept development and project planning; the measurement of facilities performance; outsourcing; property valuation and asset management.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
a) understand and evaluate the nature, scope and organisation of facilities management in the hospitality business
b) understand and evaluate principles of contemporary hospitality facilities design and capacity planning
c) apply facilities management principles and techniques to the hospitality industry whilst considering principles of sustainability as well as profit maximisation
d) understand and evaluate the principles of property and estate management systems to the planning and operation of hotel premises
e) understand and evaluate approaches to measuring the performance of hospitality facilities
f) understand different approaches to property valuation.
