Brief Description

This module aims to:

  • Critically evaluate the impact of a changing global business environment on international hospitality businesses and develop a range of strategic management solutions in response to these changes.
  • Distinguish between international businesses and the globalisation of hospitality industry.
  • Understand the importance of leadership to the strategic management process
  • Examine contemporary theoretical developments in the fields of global change and business strategy
  • Enable the student to appreciate the complexities of the global trading environment for hospitality organisations wishing to pursue international strategies, including Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
  • Analyse the difference between multinational businesses with particular reference to management styles and the strategic implications for international hospitality activities.
  • Reflect critically on contemporary hospitality practice
Indicative Syllabus

The position of hospitality in the global market place. Factors influencing the global environment. Mechanisms for effective organisational governance. Contemporary struggle for economic/political power between world regions and the impact on the hospitality industry. The role and significance of hospitality multinationals. Sustainability: financial, environmental and social considerations. Global industry structures. Global drivers affecting industries. Global strategies of multinationals. The role of culture and its impact on different management styles in an international industry.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  1. critically analyse the context of international hospitality businesses and the global trading environment.
  2. investigate contemporary themes in the field of international hospitality sectors
  3. critically evaluate the impact of the global market on different hospitality organisations and hospitality industry sectors.
  4. analyse international management styles demonstrate skills of critical analysis to a level that indicates independent thought
  5. assess the strategic options available to global hospitality businesses
