Brief Description | This module aims to describe the development of ethical theory in Western philosophy and its critiques. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will cover moral theories beginning with Bentham, Mill and Kant and focus of the difference between utilitarian and deontological approaches to moral justification. It will then investigate possible critiques of these rational approaches through Hegel and Nietzsche. It will contrast both the justification of morality and its critique through a different phenomenological approach to ethics and its relation to religion in Gaita and Levinas. |
