Brief Description

This module aims to describe the development of ethical theory in Western philosophy and its critiques.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover moral theories beginning with Bentham, Mill and Kant and focus of the difference between utilitarian and deontological approaches to moral justification.  It will then investigate possible critiques of these rational approaches through Hegel and Nietzsche. It will contrast both the justification of morality and its critique through a different phenomenological approach to ethics and its relation to religion in Gaita and Levinas.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of moral theory and its critique.
  2. Apply their understanding of moral theory and ethics to contemporary issues.
  3. Abstract, analyse and construct arguments that support their own views concerning moral theory and ethics and its relevance to their experience.
  4. Support their arguments with evidence and peer reviewed sources.

Use a range of ICT skills in order to gather, evaluate and synthesise different types of information.
