Brief Description

This module will explore the diversity, development, historicity and contexts of literary writing throughout the nineteenth-century.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover fiction, poetry and prose writing  by a range of canonical and non-canonical writers such as Dickens, Eliot, Charlotte Bronte, Tennyson, Browning, Ruskin, Carlyle, Christina Rossetti, Mark Rutherford, Thomas Hardy, George Gissing,, Menie Muriel Dowie, Flora Mayor, Oscar Wilde and many others.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1.  analyse and evaluate nineteenth-century literature in critically informed and responsive ways, paying close attention to context, contemporaneous debates, critical work, and literary features;

2.  display critical confidence in analysing and arguing about literary texts in ways informed by historical context;

3.  show an ability to develop questions, comparisons and other critical connections between a range of texts, including texts outside the class syllabus;

4. use research and bibliographic skills appropriate to Level 6.
