Brief Description

This module develops the analytical language skills already acquired in the course.

Indicative Syllabus

This level-six module provides students with a comprehensive analysis of the structure of language at the levels of the sound system, word-building system, phrase structure and word meaning. The module covers transcriptions of spoken language, as well as examples of written language.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to demonstrate that they:

  1. Can apply a critical analysis of the linguistic structure of English
  2. Can explain the distinctions between the different levels of structure in English
  3. Can critically engage with the interaction between these different levels of structure
  4. Can de-construct the language features in a range of data and examples
