| Brief Description | This module develops students' knowledge and understanding of regional dialects within Britain and attitudes towards regional dialect speakers. In addition, gain knowledge and understanding of the role of English outside of the UK and its role as a global language. |
| Indicative Syllabus | The first part of the module is about language diversity and heritage which focuses on the variety of English language-use in different regions of Britain. The module is structured around a series of case studies which further examine in specific contexts the general features of forms of English that have arisen within the UK. Students will engage in active learning to produce their own original research into regional dialects. The second part of the module develops students' understanding of the historical spread of English beyond Britain and examines the impact of the global spread of English on cultural and ecological sustainability in different parts of the world including North America, the Caribbean, South East Asia and Australasia. The module develops students' language expertise through the analysis of linguistic features of several varieties of Englishes and aims to develop an appreciation of the effects of different socio-cultural contexts including language contact and multilingualism. |
