Brief Description | In this module students apply linguistic knowledge and understanding to the practical task of gaining communication skills for responsible leadership. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module begins by looking at various ways of conceptualising leadership, focusing particularly on definitions which treat leadership as an obligation or perceived right to shape social reality in ways that influence others. This is followed by identity theory, which shows how identities are imposed and resisted in social, education and workplace situations. Students are introduced to theoretical frameworks of oral rhetoric which they put into practice to gain skills in confident, persuasive, and effective oral presentations. Peer evaluation is used to develop skills in listening and constructive criticism, and group facilitation techniques are learned through practical exercises. Underpinning the module is reflection on responsible leadership, in particular the ethical responsibility to consider the social and ecological impact of decisions. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1. seek and apply new techniques and processes to their own communication performance and identify how these might be evaluated [SEEC level 6] 2. work effectively within a team, support or be proactive in leadership and seek to resolve conflict [SEEC level 6] 3. be aware of personal responsibility and professional codes of conduct and incorporate this into their communicative practice [SEEC level 6] 4. take responsibility for their own learning and development using reflection and feedback to analyse their own capabilities [SEEC level 6] 5. set criteria for, and be effective in, professional and interpersonal communication in a wide range of situations.[SEEC level 6] |
