This module intends to introduce students to the genre of historical writing. The module will look at a number of the key issues and controversies surrounding the fictional representation of real events, in particular modern and recent history. Students will be encouraged to contemplate the complex relationship between historical record, interpretation and literary representation. Students will look at theories surrounding the writing of history and will also study texts that have fictionalised real events.

1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and an ability to analyse and evaluate, a range of theories related to writing and history;

3. demonstrate conceptual understanding of the creative relationship between theory and practice;

4. demonstrate ability to research into a particular period in history and to turn this research into creative writing;

5. demonstrate an understanding of the politics and poetics of historical writing;

6. demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between trauma and memory.
