Brief Description

This module will introduce the student to planning and writing a novel. Students will be introduced to the key elements of the long form prose form – characterisation, plot, theme, motif and structure.

Indicative Syllabus
  • How to Write a Synopsis.
  • How to Research.
  • The Opening Chapter.
  • The Literary Novel v the Popular Novel
Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and an ability to critically analyse and evaluate, a range of theories related to writing a novel;
  2. demonstrate ability to understand the relationship between taboo and transgression;
  3. demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the creative relationship between theory and practice;
  4. demonstrate ability to experiment and take creative risks;
  5. convey an understanding of the politics and poetics of the concept of transgression;
  6. demonstrate an understanding of how non-mainstream writing can potentially critique and subvert various cultural and political hegemonies.
