This modules aims to apply philosophical methods and knowledge to contemporary life

Indicative Syllabus

In the beginning philosophy was never considered to be simply an academic study taught by professors and to be learnt by rote by students, but a practice and guide to living. This module will examine philosophy as a way of life in ancient thought, how this was reawakened in the 19

th

and 20

th

centuries, and whether it can still be used to face the ethical and political issues that face us all in the present age.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of philosophy as a way of live both in the ancient and modern world.
  2. Apply their understanding of philosophy to contemporary ethical and political issues
  3. Abstract, analyse and construct arguments that support their own views of the value and use of philosophy in the everyday world.
  4. Support their arguments with evidence and peer reviewed sources.

Use a range of ICT skills in order to gather, evaluate and synthesise different types of information.
