Brief Description

This module investigates the powerful role that language plays in shaping the social world around us

Indicative Syllabus

This module brings together detailed linguistic and visual description of texts with examination of the role of discourses in shaping the structures that define society. A range of areas of social life are examined, including the construction of race, sex, disability, animals, environment, health, and consumerism. Students also have a chance to investigate additional areas according to their interests. A general framework of functional grammar is used, and among the linguistic features examined are pronoun use, metaphor, agency, normalisation, and semantic inclusion. The aim is not only to analyse discourses to reveal the underlying models of the world that lie behind them but to consider ways of intervening in discourses to contribute to social change.
